This is the twelfth and final session in the AAVC 12-lecture series. In this session, Dr. Elmensdorp and Dr. Van Antwerp will present on Trauma-Informed Care: Supporting a Resilient Ventura County. (Lecture/Interactive Q&A).

Sharon Elmensdorp, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst for the Ventura County SELPA and is contracted to provide behavioral support to Ventura Unified School District. She was formerly with First 5 Ventura County where she led the Help Me Grow initiative and worked with the pediatric and early childhood community on early identification, referral, and care coordination for young children with developmental and behavioral needs. Sharon has a doctorate in education with an emphasis in special education, disabilities, and risk studies and a specialty in autism from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Masters in psychology from Pepperdine University. As a behavioral and developmental specialist, she has consulted with and provided training for providers, educators, and families of children with behavioral disorders such as autism. She also teaches courses in applied behavior analysis as adjunct faculty for the University of Massachusetts Global.

Dr. Kathleen Van Antwerp is a leader in educational, juvenile justice, and youth outreach program reform. Dr. Van Antwerp is a transformative family engagement specialist who has led the way in introducing the science of child and adolescent development to various legal and law enforcement agencies, directly transforming the operations of youth outreach centers and community policing throughout the United States, England, Austria, and Amsterdam. With over twenty years of classroom teaching experience, primarily with at-risk students, she teaches specialized courses at California University, State, and Community colleges to mitigate adverse childhood/community and curricular experiences.

In this session, attendees will learn: 

  • About strategies to respond to ACEs and mitigate the toxic stress response. 

  • About elements of a Trauma-Informed Network of Care to respond to ACEs and toxic stress.

  • About Ventura County’s process for building a Network of Care.
